Melissa Ohden learned her mother tried to abort her, when she turned 14. She learned that her teen mom had a saline abortion while carrying her, which lasted five days. A nurse heard her weak cries and saved her while she was lying in medical waste at an abortion clinic.
Thirty-nine years later, she decided to share her story with the world.
The woman’s birth mother was a 19-year-old college student when she decided to abort the baby she was carrying. The woman was 20 weeks into the pregnancy when had the saline abortion. This type of abortion was supposed to poison the baby to death. The procedure was popular in the 1970s even though it has a high failure rate.
In the end, the baby was delivered alive. The pregnancy was terminated at around 31 weeks. No one had expected for her to survive. Doctors predicted severe disabilities had she survived.
She was taken to a hospital by a nurse and put into an intensive neonatal unit. She remained there until she was three months old. She required a feeding tube, oxygen mask, and constant monitoring.
Ohden was adopted shortly after and grew up in a loving family. She had no disabilities in the wake of the abortion.
Ohden Was Devastated
When her stepsister had an unplanned pregnancy, her parents told the girls Ohden’s story. Ohden said that she was devastated by the truth even though she had always been aware that she had been adopted.
She recalls that she was angry but she hated herself more than her birth mother. When she turned 19, the abortion survivor started looking for her parents. At age 30, she stumbled upon her family’s medical records and found that her birth father was living in the same city.
The man died just half a year after she had written him a letter informing him that she was alive and well. After her father’s death, she developed a bond with her grandfather as her family found the letter her birth father never replied to.
Ohden, a dedicated pro-lifer, found her birth mother too and learned that she was forced into the abortion. Ohden wrote a book called You Carried Me: A Daughter’s Memoir to document her bizarre life journey.
