A new study brought scientists to an interesting discovery related to attention deficit disorder in children. Until now, parents had options such as medication, psychotherapy, or a mix of both. Researchers come with a new non-invasive theory: ADHD’s challenges can be eased with basic lifestyle changes.
Children with ADHD symptoms tend to be hyperactive and to have difficulties in controlling their impulses. They also have a hard time in focusing attention. All these troubles are sometimes combined with additional issues, either behavioral or physiological.
The traditional treatment involved medication like Ritalin or Adderall.
The research included 184 children with ADHD and 104 healthy children as a control group. The children had ages between 7 and 11.
The results have shown that affected children were less likely to have a healthy lifestyle as it is recommended by governmental and nonprofit agencies.
For example, the guidelines advise parents to offer their children only two hours of screen time each day. An hour per day should be dedicated to physical activity, and sleep time should be at least 9 hours every night. The recommendations include limiting the consumption of sweetened juices and expanding the number of glasses of water.
The authors of the study say that many parents would prefer not to give ADHD medication to their children. By offering them alternatives to drugs, the whole family life can be improved, and their caregivers too could see the benefits of a lifestyle change of their own.
Changing a couple of lifestyle habits can lead the way to accommodate other healthy behaviors. Physical activity can increase thirst, which makes water more attractive. Having an hour of physical activity creates a new routine, reduces screen time and helps with the sleeping schedule.
Removing caffeinated drinks will help increase water consumption; it will also prevent sleep disturbances and any diuretic effects related to them.
The ADHD trick may seem to be something of common knowledge. But for parents with affected children, even the most basic things can turn into life dilemmas. They have to protect their children from the issues related to their affection and also to secure them a future containing as many opportunities as possible.
This is an immense responsibility for a parent. Handing advice on how to ease the symptoms can have radical positive effects on the life of the entire family.
