Great news for lobster eaters: this winter, fresh caught lobster will not have such a spicy price as in previous seasons. The reason for more affordable lobsters is the shrimp season’s closing. So, people at sea spend more time catching lobster.
It is known that many fishermen use the shrimp season to catch lobster during winter time. This particular job is extremely demanding and hard. Lobsters are not so easy to catch. Also, their demand is quite low.
Regarding shrimp season, fishermen from Maine to Massachusetts observed a drastic decline in catching. So, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Northern Shrimp Section decided to close this year’s season. They believed the cause for such a small shrimp population is caused by the ocean’s recent warm waters.
However, the shrinking shrimp population can also be good news. Because of shrimp season shut-down in the past two years, Maine’s lobstermen look for another source of income. From January till March, people do not have any other solution but stay in the fishery. More than 85 percent of the people in the fishery are lobstermen as well as shrimp fishermen.
Some fisherman and dealers are skeptical whether the number of catches is directly influenced by the number of fishermen. It is to be seen if the increased number of lobstermen will impact the lobster season this winter.
As most foods during winter time, lobsters are also more expensive than summer time. In six months the price has raised with about a dollar per pound. Still, it is not yet sure whether the prices will go down next month. This month, a live lobster is worth about 7 dollars. Even Sheila Dassatt, Downeast Lobstermen’s Association Executive Director is skeptical about a fall of lobster prices.
As a conclusion, many fishermen from Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts will be spending the next months fishing for lobster. Their jobs will face even more difficulty because lobsters retreat to deeper waters. However, the catches realized these months constitute about 2 percent of lobster annual catch. Since there are many workers in the fishery, maybe more lobsters will be brought and it could drive price down.
