Albert Einstein’s brain had been removed and stolen, by the doctor who gave the autopsy results, even though the physicist’s last dyeing wish was for his brain to be cremated along with his body.
Immediately after Albert Einstein’s death, in 1955, the brain of the scientists had been stolen and illegalkept for 50 years by the medic who has performed the autopsy.
Einstein passed away, on April 18th, 1955, when a day before his death, has checked in at Princeton Hospital, because he was having severe chest pains. The physicist died, because of internal bleeding, caused by an abdominal aortic aneurism. After his death, his brain had been taken away, by doctor, Thomas Stolz Harvey, the doctor who has performed his autopsy. After establishing the cause of death, Garvey, took the bran and measured it.
He conserved Einstein’s brain in formaldehyde, took his eyes ball out, in spite of acting against Einstein’s last wishes, who had left exact instructions for his death. After this, Harvey, sent the body to the crematory. The physicist’s last wish was to be cremated along with his brain and then, his ashes to be spread in an unknown place. Doctor Harvey’s only job was to set the cause of death, as he wasn’t a neurosurgeon, or a brain specialist.
Along the time, there have been several speculations, why the doctor wanted the physicist brain, one of them being that he was demanded so by Einstein’s personal doctor, Harry Zimmerman, although he has never admitted being behind this request.
One other reason, could have been, the fact that, Harvey had the idea on the spot, while doing the autopsy, he might have realised that the study of Einstein’s brain could be a scientific break trough. Years, before, in 1926, scientists have performed a similar study on Lenin’s brain.
Harvey, along with a medical technician from the University of Pennsylvania, have cut the brain in thousands of pieces. He gave a few pieces to doctor Zimmerman, and kept the rest, but refused to give it to other scientists.
He claimed that he was authorised to perform the autopsy and assumed that his brain was wanted for further studies. But there have been found no documents proving his authorisation.
Allegedly, the following 30 years, Harvey has changed several locations, and kept the brain with him all this time, even though he had never published any study regarding Einstein’s brain.
