In a market dominated by Microsoft and Google, Amazon intends to join the corporate email industry. Their new service, Amazon WorkMail looks like it could benefit both common users and IT managers.
Besides the classic email service, WorkMail will also let you manage your contact list, share calendars and virtual agendas, and use their book resources through email applications like Microsoft Outlook, or apps provided by iOS and Android. The thing that improves all this email experience is the fact that Amazon intends to get rid of the hassle of purchased licenses.
WorkMail is provided by Amazon Web Services, a side of Amazon which is highly successful, even though the front face of the company is e-commerce. This department is led by its founder, Jeff Bezos, since 2006.
Among the customers of AWS, there are the U.S. Defense Department and the CIA. WorkMail was initiated after customers requested a cheap email service, easy to manage, and more secure than cloud-based email. Peter De Santis, vice-president of AWS, explains that Amazon WorkMail is the answer to those requests, and that the service is built to help companies save costs and manage all sorts of complex corporate email and calendaring.
Amazon’s services will cost you $4 (£2.65) a month, providing you with 50GB of storage for WorkMail. They also give you a free tier with availability of 12 months.
Ian Maude, analyst at Enders Analysis, said that WorkMail shows how Amazon is determined not to be left behind in this era of cloud computing, where such platforms are the heart of the digital market. It also points to the competition it enters with Google and Microsoft, where Amazon stepped up the game and brought WorkMail to the table, once again responding to its customers’ needs.
The usage of the Amazon Web Services department is expanding fast, showing a rate of 90 percent compared with the last quarter of 2013. Its customers have reached the 1 million milestone, ranging from beginners to government institutions, and spreading its network in 190 countries.
Amazon WorkMail will be easy to install, and the maintenance will be even easier. It also pledges handle on its own all upgrades, bug fixes and back-ups. Moreover, Amazon claims that the email service is able to filter all your incoming and outgoing email and get rid of spam, malware and internet viruses, offering full protection from malicious email.
