More than 6 million Americans have a Facebook account, statistics reveal.
According to a new report released by the social network, more and more people declare their sexual orientation on Facebook.
In the last year, approximately 800,000 Americans updated their profile with information regarding their sexual orientation towards a person of the same gender. This represents a significant increase, bringing the number of Americans who came out on Facebook to 6 million.
Facebook even has a day to celebrate the number of users on this social network. It is called the National Coming Out Day and it is celebrated on October 11.
According to a Facebook report, “not only has the total number of Americans who have come out on Facebook raised dramatically, but so has the number coming out each day. The number of people on Facebook coming out per day is on track to be three times what it was a year ago.”
The report also highlights that the support for LGBT groups when the Court wanted to ban gay marriages also contributed to an increased number of Facebook users.
On a normal day, almost 10% of the people updating their sexual interest status say they are interested in people of the same gander. This percent doubled on June 26, when the court took the decision to legalize same-sex marriages. Moreover, before this decision, more than 25 million people used the Facebook option that allowed them to add the rainbow’s colors to their profile picture.
Another interesting fact stated in the report is that almost 78% of the people on Facebook made this change since 2012.
The fact that more than 6 million Americans have a Facebook account represents a huge step for the social platform.
