Why the Earth is in a hiatus of global warming? Many research works have suggested different theories about this. According to a new research, the missing heat from volcanoes and other sources is trapped deep beneath the Atlantic and Southern Ocean.
The study has put an end to the age-old debate among world scientists about why the rising air temperature had come to a halt after a long period of rapid increase at 20th century end.
Researchers say the trend is likely connected to roughly 30-year cooling cycles and global warming.
The University of Washington scientists, who conducted the study, said that heat is dropping in the northern and southern region of Atlantic Ocean by nearly a mile down. The phenomenon is hindering the balance between incoming heat and those radiated back into the atmosphere.
We are presently in a global cooling period, despite we know the fact that the greenhouse gases trap more solar heat at surface of the Earth. Researchers say the condition is likely to continue more than a decade.
Author Ka-Kit Tung, applied mathematics professor at University of Washington, said, “Every week there is a new explanation of the hiatus. Many of the earlier research works had necessarily focused on symptoms at the Earth’s surface, where we see many different and related phenomena. We looked at observations in the ocean to try to find the underlying cause.”
According to the scientists, the changes in circulation of Atlantic meant roughly 30 warmer years followed by 30 cooler years.
Tung said that after 30 years of warm phase, it’s time for the cool phase now.
The findings of study were published in the journal Science.
