We have been long hearing about global warming and its adverse impacts including climatic imbalances but now researchers say that our Earth is currently in the global warming hiatus and they call Atlantic and Southern Oceans responsible for this event.
Many research works had been conducted in the past to understand the pause and the drivers behind it but the questions remain unanswered. This recent study indicates that the missing global warming heat from volcanoes to sunspots to air pollution is trapped deep in the Atlantic Ocean.
The scientists from the University of Washington (UW) conducted the study.
“Every week there is a new explanation of the global warming hiatus. Previous research papers had necessarily focused on symptoms at the surface of Earth, where we see many different and related phenomena. We looked at observations in the ocean to try to find the underlying cause,” study author
Ka-Kit Tung, a professor of applied mathematics at UW, said in a statement.
According to the researches, the pace of global warming has dropped since the late 1990s and this is because of the changes in circulation patterns in both Atlantic and Southern oceans.
The heat from the Earth’s surface has dropped to nearly a mile down in the northern and southern parts of Atlantic. Researchers say this phenomenon has created imbalance between incoming and outgoing (radiated) heat into the atmosphere.
Moreover, despite the ability of the greenhouse gases of trapping more solar heat at the surface, global cooling period has started. According to the researchers, the cooling period is likely to continue for more than a decade.
For the study, Tung and co-author Xianyao Chen of the Ocean University of China, carried observations of deep-sea temperatures from Argo floats (which sample the water under 6,500 feet.
Fluctuations in surface temperature were found. Researchers say these speculations were part of a circulation cycle that involved ocean circulation and its response to changes Atlantic’s upper layers’ density.
The cycle begins when saltier and denser water at the surface of northern Atlantic led the water to sink. This leads to the changing pace of the huge current in the Atlantic that circulates heat throughout Earth.
The changing circulation patterns in Atlantic Ocean mean roughly 30 warmer years followed by another 30 cooler ones. As we have already witnessed the 30 years of rapid global warming (in the warmer phase), the 30 years countdown for cooler phase seems to have begun, Tung said.
The research work was published in the journal Science.
