A 31-year-old man from Australia died after going to Malaysia to have cosmetic surgery that could address his weight problems. His mother claimed that the extreme procedure killed him, while a coroner involved in the case warned of the risks of medical tourism.
The man booked the trip to Malaysia via Gorgeous Getaways, a medical travel firm based in New Zealand. Mr Aiple wanted to undergo several cosmetic surgeries to address the problems caused by weight gain after years of bullying and body shaming.
The man had been obese since childhood. His BMI before death classified him as severely obese.
During his stay in the army he had been body shamed for being fat, snoring, and having excess skin from the numerous weight loss attempts during his training as a recruit. His mom said that the bullying caused him to quit the army. He had also a severe depression with nothing to save him from the deep hole.
The man wanted to remove the excess skin in Australia, but the medical procedure was too expensive. So, he thought Malaysia could help him solve his problems for a third of the price.
Cosmetic Surgery Proved Deadly
In Malaysia he had a liposuction, a chin and tummy tuck, a lip filler, and an upper eye lift. He also managed to get his chest sculpted and fill his lips, all these during one stay at the Beverly Wilshire Medical Centre.
The surgeries indeed changed his life but not in the way the young patient had hoped. After just one day after returning home, Mr. Aiple was pronounced dead.
Gorgeous Getaways described the medical center as internationally certified and equipped with state-of-the-art medical instruments, some of the surgeries were so botched that led to the man’s death.
The coroner reported that he found open wounds in the man’s body which were still oozing fluid. Mr. Aiple documented the medical complications he was going through in several e-mails he sent to his mother.
At one point, he told her that the doctors seemed to not be able to fix the issues but instead “[…] they just say ‘I’ve never seen your kind of case before.’” “It’s a little scary hearing that,” the man wrote days before his death.
