Hundreds thronged outside a store in Tewksbury Saturday evening to join the campaign launched against the ouster of Market Basket president Arthur T. Demoulas.
Company’s customers in large numbers turned up at the rally to accompany the Market Basket employees in support of Demoulas.
The rally was convened in a parking lot at Saturday evening. Several customers gave speeches in English and Spanish languages in support of the ousted company’s president.
The customers were also accompanied by their families. The employees present at the venue also termed themselves as customers.
The employees of Market Basket had launched a campaign protesting the ouster of After Arthur T. Demoulas, who was fired in June by a board controlled by his cousin Arthur S. Demoulas. Initially, the employees had kept the customers away from the protest and left store shelves largely empty.
Gordon, wife of a fired Market Basket employee Tom Gordon, said that the rally was aimed at showing the company’s management that its customers are boycotting the store in support of protesting employees and not due to the empty shelves of its stores.
“I visited every Market Basket store in recent weeks, met people and encouraged their morale by filing regular video dispatches to Facebook groups used by protesters,” Jeffrey Betterini, one of the participant at the rally said while adding, “I’ve been shopping with these people since 1988. Every time I have needed anything, they have provided it.”
According to the customers who participated at the protest said they represented over a million others who were boycotting the store in support of the ousted president.
Paula Sargent of Merrimac, Mass., said that the customers who could not make to the rally held a “rolling rally” where they gathered at several stores here throughout the day.
The rally was organized at the Market Basket store in 10 Main St at 6 pm on Saturday.
