Breast cancer is a disease that robs people of their lives every year: either the women who are infected with the disease, or their loved ones who realize that they might have fewer time than planned to spend with the infected ones. It is already enough that breast cancer is a cruel and sad experience, but now it seems as though it is even a confusing one.
This is all about the already “famous” DCIS or more commonly known as ductal cancer in situ. And we are not even sure if it is cancer. It might be a risk factor, some people refer to it as precancer, but scientists have concluded that it should be known as breast cancer stage 0.
The main concern with this cancer is whether to treat it or not and while the following study reveals some information, it is suffice to say that it is quite vague, like shading light on more shadows.
Approximately 3 percent of women with DCIS resulted in dying from breast cancer. But what is both frightening and disturbing is that they died despite being given the best treatment for cancer or not having undergone any treatment at all.
More than 100,000 women with DCIS were part of the investigation, and the study was carried out over 20 years, so this is not a short term 2 year study with very few participants. A very vast and well organized study gave us little to no insight as to how we should treat DCIS.
In these 20 years, 517 cases were deemed fatal. The article, published in JAMA Oncology revealed that black women and 35 year old women who were diagnosed with DCIS would eventually die because of breast cancer. Women who were diagnosed before the age of 35, however, had an increased 17 time greater risk of dying from breast cancer.
Moreover, women who underwent radiation and were considered cured proceeded to die of breast cancer in the years that followed. And the breast cancer would not give any signs until it was too late.
Doctors turn to a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent cancer in general. They advise women to eat more healthily, exercising and lowering alcohol consumption. But one of the specialists revealed a rather sad truth that we are forced to accept: cancer is not one of the diseases that human kind has control over.
