After Washington state and Colorado legalized recreational cannabis use, entrepreneurs have discovered a whole new niche to become active in. Pot dispensaries and new-age hotels permitting marijuana consumption keep opening up in Colorado as marijuana laws keep loosening and this benefits the state in more ways than one.
One unexpected result of Colorado’s new legislation concerning marijuana use is the sudden interest that luxury cannabis tour operators have developed in Denver. These companies now have countless solutions for the pickiest of clients: from spa treatments, dinners and farm trips to weed-focused cooking classes.
Shops and dispensaries are currently independently owned as entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to make the best of the situation. Seeing that medical marijuana consumption has been legal in Colorado since 2000, all that suppliers needed to do was to invest a bit in an already existing business: space, staff and more plants. The rest took care of itself.
State citizens and tourists alike are allowed to buy anything from pre-rolled joints to all sorts of smoking paraphernalia, however, smoking the newly purchased weed will require a bit of planning since Colorado still enforces strict anti-smoking laws. Users aren’t allowed to smoke in public places, so that alternative solutions have already been provided: new-wave hotels now allow weed consumption in special rooms and clubs in cities like Denver also accommodate the state’s new delight.
Another aspect that the state has benefited from where the legalization of marijuana is concerned is the amount of tax dollars it has collected. Since the beginning of 2012, $47 million in tax revenue were collected in Colorado from marijuana use alone, and tourist purchases accounted for approximately a third of those sales. One would conclude that this is a lucrative avenue (something that many have already noticed) worth making the best of: Colorado is now full of advertisements for cannabis yoga, pot reading groups or various social activities designed to remove the stigma from smoking pot.
What remains to be seen is whether entrepreneurs will succeed in shifting customers away from marijuana used solely for medicinal purposes and towards recreational consumption.

And it’s precisely because of these changes in Colorado that cannabis tour operators are confident that in the near future, such “expeditions” will be bookable throughout the U.S.
“One goal of creating Colorado’s recreational marijuana market is to shift customers away from the medical market.”
