More than 60% of children in the U.S don’t have dental sealants, which means that they are more exposed to the risk of developing cavities. The ones that are the most affected by cavities are the kids who live in poverty because they can’t afford a doctor’s appointment, not to mention dental sealants.
These dental sealants are a liquid coating that is put on the teeth in order to protect it. Once they dry they harden and start forming a shield.
Studies showed that dental sealants cut the risk of having cavities by 80% in the first 2 years and with 50% after that. The only bad thing is that only 40 % of children have these sealants and they develop cavities three times more often.
Poor kids are more likely to have bigger and more dangerous cavities because their parents don’t afford sealants or any other dental treatment. This is why dental sealants should be offered in all the school in the U.S. If this treatment would be offered for free more children will have healthy teeth and won’t have any risk of losing them.
“Governments, schools, parents and kids all come out ahead. Dental sealants are simple, quick, easy and completely painless, there are no unwanted side effects and the benefits start immediately,” explained the director of the CDC.
Statistics showed that if a child has sealants they save their parents a cost of $11 per tooth. Despite the fact that it might seem a small saving, it is actually a great one because once their children have dental problems they are going to lose even more money. This is why dental sealants are the best prevention for cavities and they don’t cost that much.
Children should receive sealants in schools and high schools in order for every child to prevent having cavities. These cavities can appear even with dental sealants. They appear between teeth, this is why it’s so important for kids to have regular check-ups.
If children are going to receive sealants from school and go to regular check-ups they are going to be healthier and have stronger teeth. They are also going to save up money because if they have cavities, in the long run, they can lose their teeth, and replacing teeth is quite expensive.
