The demographic makeup of the workforce has been revealed by Apple for the 1st time and it looks similar to the big tech employers in Silicon Valley: Male and largely white. In a report, Apple Inc. stated that its overall U.S workforce comprises of 55 % White, 15 % Asian, 11 % Hispanic as well as 7 % black.
This is closely compared to Silicon Valley like Facebook, with 57% white, Google with 61% white and Twitter with 59% white. Diversity figures were first revealed by Google some 2 months back.
But even though Apple is more diverse, the numbers even include the employees at its 425 retail stores across the country. Employees in leadership roles comprise of 64 % white, 21% white, 21% Asian, 6% Hispanic and 3% black.
Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple has admitted that this company has a lot of work to do when it comes to diversification of workforce.
He further said that he isn’t satisfied with the numbers that are seen on the page. This is not new to them and they’ve been working hard to bring about an improvement.
The founder of Rainbow Push Coalition, the Rev. Jesse Jackson began calling for tech companies for addressing their lack of female, Hispanic and black employees in March and Silicon Valley was urged for revealing the diversity reports.
Jackson commends Cook for the efforts that he has taken in order to speak out on the state of diversity in this technology sector. The same has been done by few other CEOs.
In particular, a large gender gap has been revealed by Apple within its workforce as it has only 30% female employees and 70%male employees. Notably, the staff of eBay is 42% female, that of LinkedIn is 39% and that of Yahoo is 37%.
