The man was arraigned Tuesday and now faces charges of illegal gun possession. Sheriff’s Department said that Richard Cunningham, 57, was previously convicted of felony, but declined to disclose more details on that conviction.
Deputies said that they found in the man’s tent five firearms and loads of high-capacity ammunition. In their search, they found a pair of working machine guns from the WW II era and three handguns.
It is not the first time law enforcement arrests homeless people carrying firearms. In July, a homeless man, who was also an illegal immigrant and had been deported from the country five times, found a pistol on a pier. He then used the gun that reportedly belonged to a federal agent to shoot a woman who was walking on the pier.
The case stirred nationwide controversy and presidential candidates used the incident to push their campaign farther. Presidential hopeful Donald Trump used the story to make a case that illegal aliens are not only ‘rapists’ by they also make America’s streets and neighborhoods less secure.
Yet, not all illegal immigrants are criminals are prone to engage in unlawful activities. For instance, a homeless man found a bag full of firearms that were stolen from a state Army reserve facility in a park in Bronx and hand it over to police.
In Los Angeles, however, there is an ongoing debate on whether homeless encampments should be policed after a homeless man was killed by the police earlier this year. The man was shot by three police officers after he tried to reach for an officer’s waistband to take his weapon.
The police chief said that the three men tried to calm down the man with a Taser, but as he continued to struggle and he seemed to try and reach the officer’s handgun he was shot dead.
The incident stems from a call to the police when the homeless man was seen trying to rob another homeless man’s tent while the occupant was still inside. The homeless man known by the name of ‘Africa’ was peaceful most of the times. He even helped a rescue team clean the place up. Yet once he became violent and attacked a passerby. This is why, the police find it hard to deal with homeless people when it comes to policing.
