The US Food and Drug Administration approved the use of dissolving stents in heart disease treatments. The device is absorbed by the body once placed inside the patients with cardiovascular disease, leaving the arteries healed and flexible.
The Abbott Vascular’s Absorb GT1 Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold System is the first dissolving stent to be approved by the FDA. The device is considered a significant achievement in medical technology.
Patients no longer have to commit to permanent metal stents, as the new devices can be easily absorbed by the body in three years after implantation.
The stents are microscopic tubes that can wide and prop clogged arteries. The material used is a type of polymer. Doctors expect the blood vessels to return to normal once the stents are dissolved.
The product is marketed under the name Absorb. Until now, it had been sold in more than 100 countries around the world. It has the advantage of improving the body’s immune response, as it reduces the exposure to inorganic substances and it will aim at fighting heart disease.
Absorb is said to restore the vessels to their natural state and to offer the patient new treatment options, as it has few secondary effects and interactions. The new dissolving stent can eliminate the complications connected to permanent devices, while completely restoring vasomotor function.
After the insertion, the dissolving stent will fix inside the clogged artery and release a drug that relieves inflammation and heals the artery. Afterward, the stent will dissolve into water and carbon dioxide. The repaired artery will remain open and flexible.
The company tested the efficiency of the device in a clinical trial involving 2,000 patients. The dissolving had the same results as the metallic one. The only difference is that patients receiving Absorb had a higher rate of blood clotting.
However, FDA approved the new stent as it decided the benefits of the new device outweigh the risks. The argument was that the medical invention could be an important step towards a new type of treatment for cardiovascular disease.
An FDA medical expert explained that even patients with metal stents have to take medicines against blood clothing. The advantage with Absorb is that patients may not need them on long-term.
Coronary artery disease is the cause of death for more than 370,000 people in the US, while other 15 million struggle with the condition. Almost 850,000 patients are obliged to use coronary stents.
The medical company that developed the new device promised to offer the new product at a competitive price.
