A U.S. scientist claims that the Doomsday predictions about the Yellowstone supervolcano erupting and wiping out humanity are immensely exaggerated. Michael Poland who works at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory recently told RT that the volcano below the Yellowstone National Park has very small chances of erupting in the foreseeable future.
Poland added that the theories that the supervolcano could start a nuclear winter by blocking the Sun are “demonstrably false.” The researcher thinks that an eruption has very few chances of occurring even in our grandchildren’s lifetimes.
According to Poland, previous major eruptions in Indonesia and New Zealand did not wipe out humanity. These two events which happened thousands of years ago were much more devastating than the last Yellowstone eruption.
Poland acknowledged that the awakening of the Yellowstone supervolcano could impact humanity greatly when taking into account the world population in our times, but the doomsday scenarios about the eruption that have been recently circulating are greatly overstated.
I think the odds of a supereruption in our lifetime, in our children’s lifetimes, in our grandchildren’s lifetimes are astronomically small,
the U.S. researcher told RT.
Supereruptions Not Necessarily Lead to Humanity’s Extinction
He added that there are no tools to quantify such an eruption, but we should not be worried about it. Poland couldn’t help but wonder why Yellowstone is considered the only supervolcano that could lead to our extinction.
Poland underlined that there have been other supereruptions, but the planet has not been destroyed in the process. Even Wikipedia overstates the peril, the scientist noted.
Scientists are concerned about an incoming eruption in Yellowstone because of the changes noticed in the Yellowstone Plateau. A 0.6-inch rise per year may be a sign that the magma chamber pressure is changing, which worries the scientific community.
The U.S. Geological Survey and the National Park Service back Poland’s theory that no cataclysmic eruption will occur in the U.S. in our lifetime.
