Great news for all expectant mothers out there. It seem that all the rumors out there concerning caffeine habits during pregnancy are not entirely true. In fact, drinking coffee during pregnancy won’t make your kids dumb, or so we are led to believe according to a refurbished study.
The caffeine vs. IQ study was conducted by a team comprised of both pediatricians and gynecologists. Naturally, their findings have been published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Their assessment of the situation started from the premise that drinking coffee during pregnancy will severely affect the child’s IQ.
In order to find a way to make heads or tails of the situation, the research joint team, drafted the help of over 2197 pregnant women. Not directly, of course. In fact, they just studied a couple of blood samples, taken back a while ago. According to their records, it would seem that the blood samples were taken between 1959 and 1974. One of the researchers said that the timeframe is considered relevant to their study because, back then, women had the habit of drinking more coffee than they drink nowadays.
The project aimed to measure the amount of paraxanthine present in the blood samples. Paraxanthine is the resulting compound of caffeine, after our body breaks it down. The researchers measured the level of paraxanthine at two key moments (early pregnancy and perinatal pregnancy). After taking measuring the amount of the compound present in the bloodstream, the researchers compared them to the IQ tests taken when the children were 4 to 7 years of age.
Their projected results matched their initial hypothesis. They have concluded that drinking coffee during pregnancy won’t make your kids dumb, meaning that daily caffeine intake isn’t related to IQ or personality development.
In the past, it was thought that drinking coffee in any amount during early pregnancy would take its toll on the child’s intellect and could even affect his concentration.
But, according to this refurbished study (we say refurbished because there was another paper, published back in 2012, that reached, basically, the same conclusion as this one), there is no need to panic anymore. Drinking coffee during pregnancy won’t make your kids dumbs. However, clinicians often caution the expecting mother to drink the wonder juice with moderation.
According to their recommendations, pregnant women should limit their daily caffeine intake to 200 milligrams, which would be about 2 cups of coffee per day.
