Today, humanity reached a sad performance: the Earth Overshoot Day, which marks the moment when people consumed more than the planet is able to produce in a year.
The date was set up by the Global Footprint Network, a think tank involved in environmental sustainability.
The organization explains that humans usually use more ecological resources than nature are prepared to over. The exploit is done through overharvesting, overfishing, or carbon dioxide emissions that cannot be managed by the current surface of forests.
Every year, the date of the Earth Overshoot Day happens earlier than before. Last year, the moment was on August 13. Two years ago, it happened on August 19. And the first ever date of the Earth Overshoot Day happened on December 19.
The consumption of natural resources increases as years go by, leading a dangerous trend. There are also differences between countries, in terms of environmental policies.
If every country lived like in Australia, the world population would need 5.4 Earths to sustain the demand for resources. When taking the American style as a standard, the world need for natural products would reach 4.8 Earths.
Less pretentious is India. If everyone lived according to their standards, the Earth’s resources would be more than enough, and some of them would remain unexploited, which means more nature.
The Global Footprint Network says that the major factor in overshooting is represented by the carbon emissions, which are covered in the Paris climate agreement from December 2015. The challenge introduced by the agreement will involve a change in the way of living.
This new way of living could be installed by using the current technology, and it will also be financially advantageous, even if it will take a lot of effort and time.
For example, the changes would involve stimulating the use renewable energy and reducing the risks linked to climate change. The co-founder of the Global Footprint Network says that the only thing that stops humanity to achieve a better management of natural resources is political will.
Some countries have already succeeded in implementing environmental-friendly policies. One of them is Costa Rica, who in the first quarter of the year produced 97% of its electricity from natural resources.
The organization had also appreciated the efforts made by Portugal, Germany, and the UK, which all had set new records in renewable energy.
