It seems like Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza still has some secrets hidden inside for the human race to discover. And recently, an international team of scientists has stumbled upon a large hidden structure inside it. The way in which they succeeded in doing this is interesting, as the team looked for muons. Those are small particles which cosmic rays from the outer space sent to Earth.
On Thursday, the journal Nature described this large cavity and said that is about 30 meters long. Archaeologists from all over the world are now interested in studying it and finding out more about its purpose. However, at the moment, the scientists are not certain if the cavity is inclined or straight, or if it’s a large structure or a series of smaller ones. Mehdi Tayoubi, the leader of this project, said that the only thing they are sure about is the existence of that large void in there.
A large space found inside the Great Pyramid of Giza
During the reign of the Pharaoh Khufu (or Cheops), which lasted from 2509 to 2483 BC, the Great Pyramid of Giza was built. It’s the biggest of all the pyramids, being 139 meters high and 230 meters wide. Until now, everyone knew about the three separate chambers in the pyramid, which are placed at different levels.
There is an underground one, followed by the Queen’s chamber and finally, the King’s Chamber. Large corridors connect the three chambers, the largest of them being the Grand Gallery. But apart from these details, the rest of the interior of the pyramid has remained a mystery for centuries.
Over the years, experts have searched for certain hidden chambers, but their efforts have been unsuccessful. The main reason for this is that there are not many documents from Cheops’ time which can shed some light on this structure. This recent discovery of the large structure is a big step forward in revealing some of the secrets of the Great Pyramid of Giza.
