The 70-year-old retired elementary school teacher and Chanel Lewis’ father says he learned of his son’s arrest from TV.
Even though Chanel Lewis gave out a full confession and all DNA evidence points to him as Karina Vetrano’s killer, Richard Lewis, his father, is not entirely convinced his son was behind one of the most notorious crimes in recent local history.
Even as law enforcement officers were parading the 20-year-old attacker past a wall of journalists and reporters outside the New York Police Department’s 107 Precinct station house in Queens, Lewis’ father did not believe Chanel had anything with the murder and rape of the petite runner in Howard Beach that baffled authorities for months on end.
According to the police officers’ official report, Karina Vetrano’s father found her daughter’s lifeless body face down in towering weeds near her home in Howard Beach, after she went out for a run on August 2nd and was nowhere to be found. Police officers say the 20-year-old attacker punched his victim in the face, raped her, strangled her to death, and then fled the scene. However, the victim put up a fight the whole time and was able to capture some of her attacker’s DNA under her fingernails.
Upon comparing those samples with Chanel Lewis’ DNA, the officers confirmed the 20-year-old man was the killer they have been looking for nearly six months. However, Richard Lewis believes otherwise. The 70-year-old former elementary school teacher and father of the attacker says his son couldn’t be responsible for the killing of Queens jogger Karina Vetrano.
Richard Lewis told authorities his son never even got in a fight in his entire life and was a role-model student. The killer lived with his father at the time of Vetrano’s murder in their East New York apartment. The 70-year-old-man gave reporters a tour of Chanel’s bedroom, where a report card revealed good grades for academic performance and good behavior.
However, an anonymous source told police officers the 20-year-old man left his home angry on the day of the attack with the intention of hurting somebody. Apparently, the killer was angry because there were too many people in his house on the day of the attack.
Chanel Lewis was taken into custody and charged with Karina Vetrano’s murder of February 5th, after an officer who lives in the same neighborhood as the killer recalled the man acting suspiciously near the crime scene the spring prior to the murder.
