Recently, a team of scientists has announced the groundbreaking discovery of some teeth fossils somewhere in Germany. Nothing unusual, if it wasn’t for the fact that those fossils might change history as we know it. They are reportedly about 10 million years old and, according to the experts, don’t have a place in the already established timeline of human evolution.
What’s even more interesting is that the scientists are saying that one of the fossils resembles that of a hominin, our primitive ancestors. However, until now, they have found such fossils only on the African continent, not in Europe. According to palaeontologist Herbert Lutz, this isn’t the first time such fossils have been found in that particular place. However, science-wise, it’s a completely new and groundbreaking discovery.
Changing the history of human evolution
The experts first unearthed those fossils in September 2016, near the town of Eppelsheim. They found two fossil teeth which dated back about 9.7 million years. This area is no stranger to fossils, as many pieces have been found here over the years. One of those teeth, an upper molar, has the same traits as other fossils found there. However, another one, an upper canine, it’s completely different and experts are saying that it shares traits with the teeth of some hominin species.
The experts also got two of those teeth from one single individual. This prompted them to believe that it must have been a colony of some sorts, not only one person. Also, they have found fossils all around the Mediterranean area, but none like this. So, where did they come from?
One answer is that the teeth could come from hominin species that lived in Europe before they lived in Africa. Also, it could be the result of something called convergent evolution. The teeth could be something genetic that happened to exist in two different species with no connection.
