CDC researchers have found that the workplace food people get for free is packed with empty calories, added sugar, sodium and is a nutritional disaster.
CDC’s Stephen Onufrak unveiled that workplace food does not “align well with the recommendations in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.” In other words, the free food and drinks you get at the shared coffee machine, birthdays, meetings, and from that colleague that enjoys baking a bit too much is not good four your health or waistline.
The study found that while 8% of people usually pay for their food and drinks in the workplace, around 17% get it for free. However, the free food from work accounted for more than 70% of the calories study participants got at work, i.e. around 1,277 calories.
Workplace Food Is Not Exactly Healthy
Researchers also found that workplace food was often rich in sodium, added sugars, empty calories, and refined grains. The food lacked the nutritional content of fruit and whole grains. Not surprisingly, office workers preferred cookies, pizza, soda, pies, cakes, and candy.
The study involved 5,222 office workers who were asked about the free food they could acquire at work over a period of seven days. Moreover, many workers were unable to keep track of their calories as they were faced with a lot of distractions, including water cooler chats, cat videos, and the work that needed to get done.
Experts recommend paying attention to the content of the free food when it happens to come around. Also, ensure that you keep a healthy distance from the office kitchen and other sources of unhealthy foods and beverages. You could also convince your boss to offer healthier options for free or you could just pack and bring your own, healthy, meticulously prepared food.
