Parents in France wished to name their new born girl after the name of a famous chocolate brand but their avant-garde name has been forbidden by the law.
Finding a name for a new born has always been a challenge for parents who wish their child to have an unique and original name. Some of the parenst succed in finding the perfect name for their baby, while others are not so inspired.
A court judge from France has prohibited parents to name their baby girl “Nutella”. The judge considered that, since Nutella is already the name of the uber famous chocolate bran, the little girl will have a lot to suffer further in life, because people might pick on her and come up with ironies and bad jokes regarding her name, stated BBC. The judge even gave parents an alternative which was a derivation of the word “Nutella” and told parents they could name the girl “Ella” as it was not in the child’s interest to have a name that could traumatize her in the future.
The law in France doesn’t interfere with the names parents choose for their children, and they are free to pick what names they desire. However if local official representatives consider a name inappropriate they have the right to report those names to higher grounds.
Concerning this particular case, the parents haven’t showed up to court, and in their absence the judge decided that Ella was a proper name for their little girl.
Starting with 1993, in France, there have been several cases when parents were eventually allowed to name their new born as their heart wished to or with a very similar variant of tehir first pick.
One of the examples, would be a couple who desired to name their girl “Fraise”, which in French means strawberry, but the judge didn’t approve, and overruled their name, but ultimately parents managed to obtain the officials accept calling their baby Fraisine, a name very popular in France, in the 20th century.
In another case, from 1999, parents Ian and Sophia Renaud, succeeded naming their daughter Megane, even tough they had received a big “No” from the authorities, as the name of the girl, Renaud Megane, would sound like Renault Megane, a famous French car and brand.
Some of the strange names given by parents around the world have been:
New Zeeland : Yeah Detroit
Germany: Matti, it had been rejected, because the judge considered it wasn’t expressing the sex of the baby
Sweden: Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb1111, the name was a form of protest against the law which was banning certain names
Japan: Akuma, which means demon
