It’s homecoming for Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts who is landing in Ohio’s Akron area today for a high-flying adventure.
The co-anchor who has immense interest in flying will be in the town to cherish her hobby as she will be riding in a Goodyear blimp.
Roberts’ joyride will come soon after she inaugurates the new Wingfoot One on Saturday in front of a huge crowd including 2,200 guests during a sold-out ceremony at the Suffield Township blimp facility.
“I just can’t wait to take that bottle of champagne and crack it on Wingfoot One. It’s like, check on the list. ‘What did you do last weekend?’ ‘Christen the Goodyear blimp’,” Roberts, a gaming aficionado, said.
Roberts, a former sports reporter who still loves to venture into the field, said that she is very excited for the high ride as even if she had seen blimps at games on many occasion but this would be almost the first time when she would ride in one of the airships.
“The closest I had gotten has been in hot-air balloons,” she recalled.
Roberts said ‘flight is in her blood’. While talking about her father, Lawrence Roberts, she said that he was one of the Tuskegee Airmen.
“I might have become a pilot if broadcasting had not worked out,” Roberts said.
A HOMECOMING
Roberts shares a strong bonding with Akron as she has strong family ties with this territory that go back to generations.
Her great-grandfather, George Suddeth, and her grandfather, William Tolliver, worked for Goodyear. Her mother, Lucimarian Tolliver Roberts, was born in Akron and graduated from Akron’s East High School.
Upon marriage with her father Lawrence, her mother began the wandering life, destined for a military personnel’s wife, before settling in Mississippi. Robin was born in Mississippi.
Her father passed away in 2004, while her left for the heavenly abode in 2012.
Now, Roberts is left with only one connection with Akron and that is with her aunt Depholia Sims Butler, Lucimarian’s sister, who continued living in Akron.
Butler keeps Robin updated with the latest happenings in Akron. She sometimes sends her clips from the Beacon Journal and also remind her about her family connection and scared ties with this territory.
