A new study found that heavy marijuana users can get relief from a nasty side-effect of pot through hot showers. Few pot smokers are aware of the cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, but many of them have experienced its symptoms.
The syndrome includes vomiting and bouts of pain every few weeks after regularly consuming cannabis. Some users were even left incapacitated and unable to work, while others landed in the ER plenty of times.
Some users get antidepressants, anti-nausea medication, or anti-anxiety drugs to alleviate the symptoms. One user said he even underwent a couple of colonoscopies, an endoscopy procedure, and gallbladder surgery before he realized that marijuana was the culprit for the severe side-effect.
Multiple users have reported that they can get relief only when they take a hot shower for a few hours. When they get out of the shower, the pain usually comes back. Only a few doctors know about the cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, and the most effective cure is quitting marijuana altogether.
Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome Is No Longer a Rare Condition
Even though the syndrome used to be quite rare, in recent years, more and more pot users have reported the symptoms. Emergency rooms confirmed that they saw an increased number of patients experiencing the said symptoms especially in areas where pot is legal.
After marijuana was legalized in Colorado, we had a doubling in the number of cases of cyclic vomiting syndrome we saw,
ER doctor Dr. Cecilia J. Sorensen said.
Sorensen has been keeping an eye on the syndrome for years.
The American College of Emergency Physicians confirmed that the syndrome has morphed from an extremely rare occurrence into a common issue in just five years.
The latest study found that of 155 heavy marijuana users, 51 experienced CHS over the last six months. A heavy marijuana user smokes pot at least 20 days every month.
