Instagram has posted a new update on its Engineering blog briefing the video lovers more about its new video app ‘Hyperlapse’.
The new app utilizes image stabilization technique to allow capturing of stable videos that are similar to the polished photos on Instagram. Moreover, the technique will also allow the users to play the videos back up to 12 times faster. It is currently available on iPhones only.
The engineering team reveals more about the stabilization technique employed in the Instagram that taps into the iPhone’s gyroscope data, instead of the usual processor-intensive image analysis methods used in professional desktop film-making software, including Final Cut Pro, for stabilization.
The Hyperlapse app uses the video stabilization method ‘Cinema’ in Instagram Video in order to get the stable panning effect. The method combines gyroscope data with frames to produce a more stabilized and synthesized camera motion, making the footage appear smoother without any bumps or jolts in comparison to those videos captured by regular handheld devices.
The engineering team explains as soon as the correct orientation is developed the algorithm, it is applied to all frames, making the complete video stable.
According to the engineering team, Cinema has been altered for being used in Hyperlapse. The new Cinema technique is so designed that it computes the correct orientation for only those frames which the app wants to retain and scrap all those shaky ones. This gives a smooth video without the regular handshake effects.
Briefing about the new app on its website, Instagram had earlier posted:
“Traditionally, time-lapse videos depend on holding your phone or camera still while you film. Hyperlapse from Instagram features built-in stabilization technology that lets you create moving, handheld time lapses that result in a cinematic look, quality and feel — a feat that has previously only been possible with expensive equipment.”
The engineering blog of Instagram contains illustrative videos showing the whole process in real-time. The examples can be very informative for those who are interested in making videos as they will give more clarity about the movie magic produced by Hyperlapse.
