The Associated Press found that the Interior Department wasted more than $138,000 on a new door for Interior Secretary’s office. The story was confirmed by Huffington Post.
According to the AP report, the department picked a Maryland-based company firm called Conquest Solutions LLC to deliver the door. The contract’s summary briefly describes the transaction as ‘Secretary’s Door’.
The company couldn’t be reached for comment, while the department has yet to reply to a request for comment. A spokesperson for the agency confirmed that the purchase did take place, and that the new door was an attempt to give the Interior Department’s building a more modern look.
The spokesperson said that Secretary Ryan Zinke was not initially notified about the cost of the new door, but when he found out, he agreed that it cost “a lot of money.” According to the spokesperson, every new item added to historic buildings like the Interior Department headquarters including pencils has ‘astronomical’ costs.
This is a perfect example of why the secretary believes we need to reform procurement processes,
the spokesperson added.
A High-Security Door Could Cost that Much
According to a separate report, the department has just bought a new door that involves fingerprint or retina scanning. An expert in such doors said that they do tend to cost a lot, and $139,000 is the approximate price. The expert added that $140,000 for one such high-security door “is not really that far out of the ballpark.”
Conquest Solutions confirmed on its website that it has reached a deal with the Interior Department to install a door with an enhanced digital control system. The new tech is expected to trim energy consumption.
However, Zinke’s critics believe that the door was a lavish expense. The head of the Sierra Club Lands Protection Program, Athan Manuel, blasted the Interior Secretary for being a ‘walking scandal’ who wants a life of luxury on taxpayers’ expense. Manuel hopes the new door hit the Interior Secretary on his way out.
