The movie of the year is, undoubtedly Interstellar, written and directed by the same guy who brought us The Dark Knight franchise. Every science enthusiast has gone to see Interstellar and marveled at its fascinating space and time theories. One of those theories has stirred quite a controversy in the science world, and experts argue whether or not Interstellar wormholes can exist in real life.
In Interstellar, a team of astronauts want to see if they can find other habitable planets in other galaxies. They journey through space using a wormhole. This wormhole is scientifically known as the Einstein-Rosen Bridge.
In 1935 Albert Einstein, the renowned physicist and his assistant, Nathan Rosen, have come up with a theory that described space to be two sheets of paper connected by particles in the form of a bridge.
They called their theory the “Theory of Everything” but it was rejected by the scientists of that period saying that the particle behavior in their theory did not correspond with how the particles behave in real life. They also believed black holes to be some sort of doors to entering the wormholes.
The movie Interstellar has been seen as pretty accurate by the scientific community, and its depiction of wormholes and black holes. To create the Interstellar wormholes, director Christopher Nolan worked with astrophysicist Kip Thorne.
Thorne, who was also involved in helping adapt Carl Sagan’s novel Contact for the big screen, made sure that the wormholes are as accurate as possible. He said that it was a great experience to work on Interstellar, a challenging and rewarding experience. Thorne was under contract that he cannot divulge anything about the film to his fellow astrophysicists.
He added that the movie is not 100% accurate since it is not possible to come out alive after entering a wormhole. He said the Interstellar wormholes could not exist in reality because black holes do not cause wormholes. Also, Thorne said, approaching a black hole would have ripped the astronauts apart due to the extreme gravitational forces that surround it.
Somehow, we kind of suspected the Interstellar wormholes are not 100% accurate, since it’s a sci-fi movie, after all.
