The latest scientific discovery reveals that water may have existed on our planet long before the scientists believed. The researchers have found evidence that the ingredients found in water were stored in the Earth’s surface. The new studies show that there might have been water in the inner solar system earlier than thought: 135 million years earlier.
The lead author of the latest scientific discovery is Adam Sarafian, who studies at the Massachusetts Woods Hole Research Center. He said that:
“Our findings show the earliest evidence of water in the inner solar system.”
The team of scientists lead by Sarafian discovered water in the molecular contents of the meteorites from Vesta, that can be found in Antarctica. Previous studies have found no water in the remains of those meteorites.
The latest scientific discovery made by Sarafian and his team of researchers reveals that there are traces of hydrogen and oxygen molecules.
Previous studies have shown that water existed in the cooler, outer parts of the solar system. In the inner solar system the temperature was too high so any water would become vapors and sent to the outer regions of our solar system.
Scientists believe that the asteroid Vesta remained frozen while the Earth grew and changed over the next four billion years.
Sarafian said that:
“Vesta gives us a snapshot of what Earth maybe looked like when it was first forming.
Apparently, the asteroid Vesta has the same chemical fingerprint as planet Earth.
Scientists have proved that the nitrogen found on Vesta came from the same source as the nitrogen found on Earth. Other bodies found in the solar system like comets or the sun, have different chemical composure. The latest scientific discovery reveals that Earth and the asteroid Vesta have the same hydrogen chemical signature.
