LG and Huawei have launched not only one edition, but two editions of smartwatches that come with more than 40 graphical faces that are pre-installed. The basic version of the watch is powered by Android Wear, and the second has a 4G chip and a whole new operating system. The good news is that, compared to Apple smartwatches for instance, these LG/Huawei ones don’t have to be linked to a phone in order to give and receive phone calls or messages. Sapphire crystals embellish the display of the Huawei Watch that uses the Android Wear operating system. In addition, this particular display is bigger than the other one that has just been released.
The market research firm Canalys has stated that the demand for smartwatches has been limited, even if Moto 360, Asus ZenWatch and Samsung Gear Live have made a lot of publicity and their Google Android Wear system is very much appreciated by customers. Only 720,000 watches were shipped in 2014, but sales are expected to grow this year. One of the biggest companies who is ready to launch its new smartwatch product is Apple itself, who is making all the preparations for its grand release in April. The company has made a rich campaign meant to convince the public that this is an investment worth having.
Huawei’s smartwatch is the first one that the film has created and released, and curiosity sells.
George Jijiashvili, wearable analyst at the tech consultancy CCS Insight stated that Huawei’s entry on the market will lead to price competition, but the timing is not very favorable for the company, taking into consideration the Apple Watch that is going to take over the market soon and the differences that always challenge the public. The place for making the announcements was very well chosen in order to assure some part of the smartwatches’ success: the Mobile World Congress trade fair in Barcelona.
The LG Watch Urbane has a generous 1.3 in (3.3cm) display, which is made of plastic OLED that is supported by a stainless steel frame. The three buttons on the side are designed to make everything come true. A very important feature is that one of them has the role of being a panic alarm: the GPS identifies the location of the wearer and transmits the information to a preset phone number. Additionally, the watch has a heart rate monitor, barometer and nine-axis accelerometer.
The Huawei Watch’s display is larger, 1.7 in (4.2cm) but the material is similar to the LG one, as well as the frame. However, the display is scratchproof and stronger than the colleague’s. The screen’s resolution is also higher than the one of the LG smartwatch: 286 pixels, as compared to 245 pixels.
Thomas Husson from the consultancy Forrester said that:
“Consumers, specifically in the Western world, may not have expected a great smartwatch from Huawei. However, Huawei’s new Android-powered smartwatch looks great.”
