Market Basket employees protest put dent on US jobs report for August

The mass protest launched by thousands of employees of private grocery chain Market Basket in June in support of its CEO has adversely impacted the US jobs report for the month of August.

The number of workers in the retail sector declined significantly by 8,000 last month. A 17,000 worker decline in food and beverage stores contributed to the high figures of decline in staffs nationally.

Thousands of Market Basket employees across Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire were canned in July after they staged severe protests against the removal of their CEO Arthur T. Demoulas from the company.

However, Demoulas resumed to his post in late August and all associates were welcomed back by the CEO, but over two months of disruption succeeded in putting a dent in the August jobs report.

Following presentation of the report, BLS Commissioner Erica Groshen, in her commentary said the decline in the numbers of workers at food and beverage stores was, “heavily impacted by employment disruptions at a grocery store chain in New England.”

According to Groshen, other parts of the retail sector performed fairly good.

The auto dealer employment increased by 5,000. Also, the auto sales increased to their fastest pace last month since 2006.

Meanwhile, the market watchers and analysts said that the Market Basket employees’ protest is tend to have an unexpected impact nationally as despite having a massive strength of workers, the absence of employees of the store chain adversely impacted the country’s overall jobs report in August.

Remember that weird girl in school who never quite managed to fit in? Who was always silent and strange? That was me during my entire teenage life. A few years after finishing college (with a degree in arts) I decided that the best way to become more sociable, while also feeling safe, is to test my people skills online.
