Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley on Thursday announced a dedicated hotline for employees of the super-market chain Market Basket after the reports of the embattled company cutting down the hours of its part-time employees surfaced this morning.
According to Coakley, her office witnessed a ‘significant uptick’ in calls in the past 24 hours as over 100 calls poured in to the AG’s office from the employees who were battling for their rights.
There was a panic situation among the staffs of the embattled super-market chain this morning following an online post on the company’s official Facebook page.
“We have heard from several sources that with sales down 90 percent, no part time help will be scheduled for next week,” said a post on the Save Market Basket Facebook page published around 8:30 am today.
Earlier last week, the Attorney General of Massachusetts and New Hampshire Attorney General Joseph Foster had written Market Basket leadership cautioning them against work terminations, besides reminding them of laws pertaining to it.
“Market Basket is a major employer in Massachusetts, and we remain hopeful that the parties will come together to reach a positive resolution and restore the vibrancy of the business,” Coakley said in a statement.
“With the rapidly evolving circumstances, we have established this hotline to answer questions directly from workers and make sure their rights are being protected, “Coakley further said.
The employees can submit their applications and grievances to her office’s Fair Labor Division at 617-963-2400.
Hundreds of workers refused to come for work demanding Arthur T Demoulas to be reinstated as president. Amid the protest, the supermarket store’s shelves turned empty as deliveries of perishable products occurred sporadically.
CEO Arthur T. was ousted after his cousin Arthur S. Demoulas managed to secure a majority of backing on the board of directors.
