Living and eating healthy is not just a fad, as some might think. Those who care about what they eat and are concerned about their overall health are not snobs. They are normal, conscious people. There are thousands of scientific studies that proving that eating a healthy, diverse diet will help us avoid deadly illnesses and keep us young for a longer period of time. That is the case with the Mediterranean diet. Recent studies have shown that keeping a Mediterranean diet keeps the DNA stronger.
According to scientists, eating a Mediterranean diet can help us prolong our life and keeps us looking younger, genetically speaking.
The researchers discovered that eating fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and olive oil can stop the DNA code from messing up as our body ages. The new study on the health benefits of Mediterranean diet was published in the British Medical Journal.
The study analyzed more than 5,000 nurses and what they ate for more than 10 years. Researchers from Boston kept track of their health for the last decade and it appears that those who have kept a Mediterranean diet decreased the risks of developing heart-related diseases.
The scientists have not discovered yet why exactly is the Mediterranean diet so beneficial for the human health, but they believe one of the answers resides in the fact that this diet contains a large quantity of fresh veggies, fruits, fish poultry and olive oil, which is packed with anti-oxidants. As opposed to eating a large quantity of red meat, animal fats and butter, the Mediterranean diet will help us stay healthier, stronger and younger.
The researchers believe food that are very rich in vitamins, like fruits and vegetables are, help the tissues and cells against stress and damage caused by aging. The study reveals that the Mediterranean diet keeps the DNA stronger and more efficient. In order for this conclusion, the researchers studied the small structures called telomeres. The telomeres protect the ends of the chromosomes, which are responsible for storing the DNA code in our body. This prevents the loss of genetic information when the cells divide.
