On Monday, doctors at the Nairobi-based Kenyatta National Hospital went on strike after a neurosurgeon who operated wrong patient was suspended for malpractice.
Last week, a doctor, an anesthetist, and two nurses were suspended after the management found that the wrong patient underwent brain surgery on their watch. The team opened a man’s skull to remove a life-threatening blood clot. The only problem was that the clot was not there since that was the wrong patient.
This is because the patients’ identification tags had been swapped in a mix-up last month. During the surgery the doctor realized that there was no blood clot to be found and that an error must have occurred.
According to the Washington Post, hundreds of doctors at the hospital have protested the suspension of their colleague by staging walkouts. Protesters claim that the doctor and the nurses should have not been punished for an administrative issue. They also placed the blame on a chronic staff shortage at the institution.
Doctors Protest Neurosurgeon’s Suspension Despite ‘Procedural Shortcomings’
In a statement, the medics acknowledged that their co-worker, which they called their ‘friend,’ was behind “some procedural shortcomings” but the wrong patient ended up in the operating room because the ward staff had misidentified him.
The doctors behind the protests are known in Africa as registrars, which means that they need extra training before being experts in their field.
Both two patients had head injuries when they were brought to the hospital on Feb. 18 and 19, but only one needed surgery. The hospital announced in a Facebook post that they are both undergoing treatment and that their state improved in the meantime.
The Kenyan hospital, however, has many other similar issues to deal with. A recent report shows that some new moms were raped by hospital staff. The victims even produced video footage to back their claims.
