Paleontologists everywhere are constantly digging to find new species of dinosaurs that have lived on our planet millions of years ago. Finding new species can shed new lights on the evolution of species, thus the evolution of the human being. Only through understanding the past we can better comprehend the present and improve our future. Everything is interconnected and we need to know as much of our past as possible. The scientists have discovered a new species of T-Rex in Venezuela. The new dinosaur was a meat-eater and scientists believe it was a close relative to the infamous Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The new species of T-Rex was named Tachiraptor admirabilis and the scientists discovered two bones belonging to it. The bones are from its lower legs and scientists assume that the dinosaur was five feet tall.
The new species of T-Rex was unearthed in a site which contains tiny crystals. These crystals allowed the researchers to approximate their age and the team of paleontologists believes that the sediment dates back more than 200 million years ago. Apparently, during this age, the area where the new species of T-Rex was discovered was volcanically active. This period was actually one million years after the mass extinction that eradicated the Triassic age.
Thomas Holtz Jr., paleontologist at the University of Maryland said that: “These survivors of the Triassic-Jurassic mass extinction were the ‘ground zero’ for later theropod evolution.”[The new study] shows that important discoveries don’t have to be of the biggest or the scariest [dinosaurs].”
There is another creature that resembled the Tachiraptor admirabilis called Laquintasaura, which is believed to have lived in the same area at the same time with the new species of T-Rex. Scientists say that the two looked very similar but come from different groups. The Laquintasaura was from a group called ornithischians.
Some paleontologists believe that many small dinosaurs that lived in the era looked more or less the same. They believe that these species of dinosaurs did not grow to be very large until millions of years later.
The research about the new species of T-Rex was published in the Journal of Royal Society Open Science.
