On Monday, the less conventional social networking site Reddit announced the roll out of a stand-alone news site – Upvoted. And the main news source for the site’s stories will be Reddit community and its members’ musings.
Former Myspace editorial head now-turned editorial chief for Upvoted Vickie Chang explained that the new news site is a response to how other media outlets processed raw information gathered on Reddit to write news articles. Chang said that Upvoted’s goal is to ‘tell the whole story’ rather than to stick to chunks of it.
“A lot of stories don’t tell you what led up to [a viral] post, or what happened after,”
Every piece of news posted on Upvoted would also give credit to the original poster of the news through a link to the thread that inspired editors. Reddit staffers explained that their site is a major source of newsworthy content for Twitter, Facebook and even local news papers or programs.
Upvoted is an attempt to control how the news on Reddit are edited and served to the world. Editors hope that they could post between 10 and 20 articles every day. But the final goal is 40. Reddit also plans to launch one podcast and two new videos every week.
The videos will include an Ask-Me-Anything session and an episode from an original series especially created by Reddit for its fan base.
Reddit pledged that the news site would provide only original content. And that may help the site lure in more viewers and having an extra control on the message it delivers.
The stories on the news site will be curated and written by a team of 10 editors. Editors are expected to find newsworthy stories on Reddit, double check the details, have a talk with original posters, and then write the article. Chang said that every story would be ‘tied back’ to Reddit.
Upvoted stories will have a separate forum on Reddit, where users can comment on them. Readers won’t be able to comment directly on the news site, however, and Upvoted won’t receive a special status though its stories may be promoted on Reddit.
When asked about what type of content Upvoted stories would feature, Chang disclosed that nothing was ‘off the table’ and that there were no fixed rules. Each story would be picked to better suit the community’s interests, Chang also said.
Reddit will try to monetize the news site through sponsored content written by Upvoted’s editors. There will be no pop-up ads or pesky banners, the site announced.
