Orcinus orca, commonly known as the killer whales belong to the oceanic dolphin family. These toothed whales are well known for being very social and are found in most of the oceans, from the cold Arctic and Antarctic to the warm tropical oceans. However, the Species at Risk Act in Canada has declared this species of whales as being threatened. For most of the years of their lives, these whales travel in a group of family. The whale second from the top in this picture is a two year old calf and the one in the middle is the young-of-the-year.
This beautiful picture giving us an insight into the movement, health and reproduction of these killer whales has been made possible due to the untiring efforts of the scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries department and the Vancouver Aquarium. These whales were found in British Columbia.
The scientists used a special aerial vehicle, also known as a drone for conducting this research, however they didn’t provide any name to this vehicle. This hexacopter which was custom-made for this exercise flew above the whales. It was over 100 feet above them which was enough to get sufficient details about them but not disturb them in the process.
