
The panda cub is eating only pears and sweet potatoes before it is able to come back to its usual diet.
A panda cub from the National Zoo has undergone surgery and now is recovering. The panda cub is now recovering at the Smithsonian National Zoo. The surgery was made in order to alleviate a blockage that the animal had in his intestine.
The spokeswoman from the Zoo mentioned that now the animal is out of danger and it is recovering. The animal has this surgery Friday at the Zoo. The blockage in his intestine is now gone and the panda is safe.
This type of blockage is rare ailment for pandas. It was a mass of bamboo which was not digested well enough but the panda. The blockage was in his small intestine and needed to be alleviated before the panda suffered more.
The panda cub turned one this August. The ones who saved it were the zoo staff who offered the panda special care. In order to find exactly what the problem of this animal was, the zoo staff took the panda to an ultrasound at a veterinary hospital. After they saw the blockage they knew that the panda was in danger and was suffering so they decided to perform a surgery in order to save it.
The veterinary surgeon who was able to save the panda cub was Sebastian Gordon. He mentioned that the surgery went well and that the pup is out of danger. The surgery was not as complicated as the zoo staff previously believed and the animal is now recovering without problems.
In order to make his recovery easy, the zoo staff is feeding him with soft food. The panda cub is eating only pears and sweet potatoes before it is able to come back to its usual diet. The usual diet of a panda is bamboo, but in this case, bamboo can be dangerous for the pup.
The panda cub, Bei Bei, is still nursed by its mother but it also eats solid food. The zoo staff mentioned that this is a rare condition but it affects both house pets and exotic animals. This type of blockage can make it hard for animals to eat and they can die if nobody notices the problem soon enough. The panda cub is currently monitored by the staff and it is also kept away from other people until it recovers.
