A bundle of studies presented at the meeting of the American Society for Nutrition have highlighted the benefits of eating mostly plant foods. It turns out that replacing meat with a vegetarian diet can reduce one’s risk of developing heart disease, weight gain, but also overall mortality rates. On long term, such a diet is associated with longevity and a smaller disease incidence.
Plant foods are great for health
For this research, scientists looked at a series of longitudinal studies that compared eating plant foods with a meat-based diet. One such study showed that eating plant proteins instead of meat proteins reduced the risk of coronary heart disease. A different study showed the same proteins reduced the chance of getting clogged arteries.
However, researchers warn us to be careful. Simply eating plant foods won’t do, as they need to have a good quality. For instance, if you eat fruits, vegetables, or other healthy vegetarian foods, you should be fine. On the other hand, processed plant foods are bad for the health and they make you gain weight.
We should opt for a balanced diet with healthy fruits and vegetables
Plenty of the studies show eating mostly plant foods is the ideal diet you could adopt. However, experts are still debating if meat is our enemy or not. Some of them suggest we should stop eating meat completely, while others say we need to eat a bit from all types. Therefore, researchers decided to rate different types of foods and see what scores the highest.
According to the results, the best combination included both plant foods and animal foods of good quality. People who ate these foods were the healthiest and had a mortality risk lower by 30 percent. To make things easier, they revealed an ideal meal. As long as we consume plenty of fruits and vegetables and eat less grains, things should look great for our future.
