Pennsylvania’s Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane made some unsettling disclosures this Wednesday at a press meeting but failed to provide the necessary answers to key questions on the criminal charges she currently faces.
She said that the recent lawsuit is just the work of her political adversaries that fear that she may make public some sensitive e-mails loaded with pornographic content and racist remarks made by her opponents.
Yet, she declined to answer questions on the accusations of handing over confidential grand jury material to a major newspaper with the sole purpose of taking revenge on a fellow prosecutor that had shamed her in public.
She insisted on her innocence but also failed to acknowledge that if she were to release the pornographic e-mails she would break again grand jury secrecy rules. During the entire press conference she insisted the whole trial was a scheme to get her out of the office before she exposes high ranking officials and judges in a ongoing “porngate” case.
She also claims that there is a “filthy e-mail chain,” and the people involved in it “desperately” try to erase their traces even if that means removing her from office. The AG was charged early this month with forswearing, obstruction of law, and conspiracy, while two of her office staffers were charged with criminal contempt for unlawfully entering the e-mail accounts of the grand jury members that investigate her case.
On the other hand, some veteran lawyers do not understand her logic. She stated that the lawsuit was a conspiracy against her because she was about to disclose the pornographic e-mails. Yet, she did lie to the grand jury and disclosed secret material to the press.
“I don’t get the connection,”
said Attorney Sam Stretton, who also had some cases involving attorneys.
Mr. Stretton added that the bottom line was whether she committed the crime or not; the motivations of people that currently accuse her of that crime are secondary. The attorney thinks that her best option is to plead guilty.
Attorney William Costopoulos believes that Ms. Kane won’t be able to win a trial with the remarks she made Wednesday. He believes that she did it for the sake of public opinion.
According to court papers, Ms. Kane purposely released secret grand jury data on an ongoing 2009 investigation into the wrongdoings of Whyatt Mondesire just to take revenge on the former assistant AG Frank Fina who conducted that investigation.
Ms. Kane believes that the top prosecutor had leaked information on another investigation to a local news paper to publicly shame her because she had refused to press charges against top officials found guilty of bribery. Ms. Kane underscored that the information was leaked shortly after ‘porngate’ scandal emerged.
