Red Tide Responsible For Fish Kills In Florida

Red tide in Florida waters

The red tide is responsible for fish kills.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, a red tide bloom caused fish kills and respiratory issues. Areas such as Sarasota and Manatee counties had to deal with the red tide problem for a few weeks. This organism can be found in Gulf waters. When it is found in large amounts, the red tide is able to kill fish and cause respiratory problems not only for animals but also for humans.

What people should do if they want to avoid the red tide? First of all, if you feel nose, throat or eye irritations you should leave the area as fast as you can. Moreover, if you have a chronic respiratory disease, do not go to places where the red tide was discovered. The organism is a threat for your pet, so do not allow it to drink water from places with a high concentration of red tide.

Another important thing is to pay attention if you enjoy swimming. It is better to avoid those areas and go to safe places, such as pools. The authorities do not allow people to get mussels or oysters while the red tide is present. The best thing you have to do is to avoid areas where this organism is present and call the authorities if you feel something unusual while being on the beach.

There were thousands of fish found dead along Florida beaches. Even though there was a lot of dead marine life around them, some tourists did not seem to pay attention.  They swam and tried to have a good time even though there were dead fish in the water and on the beach. However, people should be aware of the fact that it is dangerous for us too.

People think that the authorities could handle the situation better. They want to beaches to be cleaned up and also to find a way to end the red tide bloom. Unfortunately, this bloom can last for months before the beaches will be safe again for animals and people.

When it is found in small colonies, the red tide is not dangerous. Sometimes its concentration is higher that it should and this is the moment when they become a threat to our respiratory system and for the fish. Do not forget that there are a lot of people who have an income due to fishing, so this event could also be dangerous for the economy.
