TripAdvisor, an online widely-known travel company, has adopted a new policy that forbids tourists from touching wild animals, while the company will also stop selling tickets to animal attractions.
During these attractions, tourists usually touch and feed captive wild animals or some endangered species. Thanks to this new regulations, tourists will no longer be allowed to swim with dolphins, ride elephants, and other shows involving bears and big cats.
This initiative aims to inform people that if they no longer go to any animal attractions, these places will stop being productive, so their managers will have to shut them down. TripAdvisor officials stress that many efforts have been made to raise awareness about this widely-spread problem.
As a result, some local communities decide to address this issue leading to an attendance decrease at the Celebration, one of the most important Tennessee events which host a walking horse show, where the animals undergo an enormous stress.
During this event, trainers deliberately injure their horses’ legs and feet using chemicals or other dangerous tools in order to create a pain-based gait called the ‘Big Lick.’
That is why a significant part of the audience was disgusted with this abuse and stopped attending this show, while other joined their efforts to make new regulations that would forbid this type of inhuman behavior towards animals.
A group of 40 United States senators has sent a letter to Tom Vilsack, the Secretary of Agriculture, prompting him to issue a new rule that will forbid animal attractions such as the ‘Big Lick.’
This new rule will be an upgrade to the Horse Protection Act, and 140 officials have already signed this policy, while more are expected to sing. This rule will represent a tremendous step forward in people’s initiative to deal with cruel animal attractions.
Based on the latest reports, the bills have received a significant bipartisan support from both chambers. It is worth mentioning that they are backed by the horse industry and the veterinary community as well.
As further evidence comes to the surface, a horse collapsed last week during the Horse Show Championship in North Carolina. There is already a video roaming on the internet with the almost tortured animal.
According to Dr. Michael Blackwell, chief veterinary office at HSUS, the horse was intentionally hit in order to adopt an unusual gait. These events are the living proof that cruel animal attractions must be stopped.
