Recent research has found that pasta doesn’t make you fat as long as the pasta is consumed as part of a healthy diet. “Refined” carbohydrates have been demonized for years as being one of the causes of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
The latest study suggests that the bad press around pasta does not have any scientific basis. Pasta is one of the foods with a low glycemic index which means that it cannot be absorbed rapidly by the body and it does cause spikes in blood sugar levels.
To test the theory, a research team at St. Michael’s Hospital sifted through dozens of randomized trials and studies about (more or less) pasta consumption. Around 30 trials involving 2,500 participants focused exclusively on the risks of eating pasta in a bid to find the best low-glycemic index diet.
Pasta Can Promote Weight Loss if Eaten Right
The study which appeared this week in the BMJ Open shows that there is no statistically significant link between pasta consumption and weight gain or high levels of body fat.
In fact analysis actually showed a small weight loss,
lead author John Sievenpiper, MD, said.
Researchers are confident that pasta can be added to a healthy diet like the GI diet without additional risks. The study participants ate on average 3 servings of pasta every week. Over 12 weeks, they lost 500 grams on average by replacing other carbohydrates with pasta.
Scientists insist that pasta and a low-glycemic index diet are a match made in heaven. The team now plans a follow-up study to better understand the weight loss benefits of pasta. Dr. Sievenpiper underlined that pasta doesn’t make you fat as long as you include the dish into a healthy dietary pattern.
