Autonomous or driverless cars seem to be the main area of concern for the tech giants as well as the global car makers.
The newcomer Tesla Motors (TSLA) early this week rolled out its 2014 Edition Model S with several self-driving features including automated speed change, automatically slowing down at traffic and remotely summoned on private property.
TSLA CEO Elon Musk said the company’s latest vehicle comes with a new dual-motor that gives it facilities like all-wheel-drive and autopilot that allows some of the driverless car tracking features.
Commenting upon the future prospects of driverless cars, an ‘unenthusiastic’ Musk said, “A driverless stage may take five or six years from now, when the drivers would enjoy driving in real sense by just can literally getting into the car, going to sleep and waking up at their respective destination.”
If talk about driverless cars, the first name coming to mind is search giant Google, which has been working on this ambitious idea for a few years now.
Google has so far not specified any time frame for the ambitious driverless car project but has initiated the programme.
Auto experts believe the first batch of the driverless cars are most probably to possess the same features as that of Model S. Capable for adjusting speed based on signs and stopping at traffic and moving lanes.
A true driverless experience will be different from the today’s cars. The car will look more like a taxi, allowing more room to rest your feet and work on other things, while the car goes from point-A to point-B.” said Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
The market watchers feel even if the developers including Google, Tesla and other driverless car manufacturers succeed in inventing the same, approval by regulators may come as stumbling block.
But the traffic experts believe among the most essential requirements include better designing of a road map and system that could be easily comprehended by the self-driving cars. However, they feel these basic requirements are not easy to be applied and hence can push the project for many more years.
