According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, caramel-coated apples produced near Bakersfield, California, were contaminated with listeria bacteria. This bacteria caused dozens of people to be rushed to the hospital and killed seven of them last year. Now, Minnesota announced 4 new cases of the illness. 16 brands of caramel apple produces have stopped their work and are being verified by doctors and specialists.
The list of the brands is as follows: Aamodt’s, Abdallah, Angeli Foods, Candy Jar, Carnival, Celebration, Circle K, Finnottes, Grandma Bev’s, Jerry’s Foods, Karamel King, Kowalski’s Markets, Kitchen Cravings, Lunds & Byerly’s, Supermom’s, and Wescott.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that from October to December, the number of catastrophes have been registered in more than 11 states: Arizona, California, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin. As a result, all shipping of Gala and Granny Smith apples were stopped and the checking of the apples began after the 2nd of December, when the last shipping of apples happened. The results were atrocious. The company’s president, Leonard Bidart, apologized for the damages created by the infected apples.

Listeriosis affects the immune system. It has a strong effect on older adults, children, new born babies, pregnant women. Antibiotics is claimed to be the only cure and the symptoms are the following: fever, nausea, diarrhea, convulsions, muscle aches.
The consumers are advised not to buy and eat any kind of pre-packaged coated apples, not only caramel ones, but also chocolate, sprinkles, nuts and all the other categories of coated apples that are produced by the brands that were publicly stated to have had infections with listeria bacteria.
