A disturbing story has reached the public on Wednesday, when a 15-year-old girl from Florida shot her brother to death, claiming years of abuse as a motive for her actions. Shocked by the story, the police and the community is searching for answers.
The incident took place at the family’s home in the rural part of Florida, when parents were away, leaving older brother in charge of his three siblings, ages fifteen, eleven and three. The father is a truck driver, and his wife often went with him on his trips. The older girl, whose identity remains unknown, took their parents gun from their locked bedroom and shot her brother.
His body was found by the White Springs police later that night when the mother of a friend of the younger sister called 911 after receiving a phone call from the girl. Both sisters ran away from home after committing the crime, and this woman found them.
Upon interrogation, the 15-year-old girl confessed she was the one to pull the trigger, but she did not give a solid motive for her drastic action. She was aloof at first, avoiding eye contact, but soon she burst into tears, and gave a full confession as to killing her older brother in his sleep. Authorities found the brother dead in the living room and the murder weapon on a blanket in the hallway.
The brother is not the only alleged abuser; according to police documents on the abuse, the girl often received lock-up treatment as punishment for her misbehavior. The mother was the one to keep her locked as long as 20 days, leaving her alone, a blanket and a bucket as her only means of living.
The police report specifies that the older girl has tried to take her own life in the past, but proper authorities were never notified. The girl has had a hard life, and trouble had found her other times in the past. Police reports said that in 2010, the girl was molested by her uncle, who was later convicted based on video evidence. The abuse had been going on for some time, and the uncle was put on the registered sex offender’s list.
The girls are both in juvenile detention now on, pending conviction on suspicion of murder; a prosecutor is currently trying to decide if the girls will be treated as adults or kids in the up-coming trial. Their parents will be charged on multiple ends, some of which are child abuse and ill-treatment and also failing to supervise underaged children in their custody. The 3-year-old has been transferred in the child welfare custody.
