AT&T acquires Iusacell for $2.5 billion to offer vast US-Mexico network

Nov 8, 2014 By Christina Langfold Leave a Comment

att-logo-630

US telecom carrier AT&T on Friday announced its plans to acquire Iusacell, the third-largest wireless operator of Mexico, for USD 2.5 billion in order to create a vast mobile network covering the two nations.

Notably, the deal is subject to get green signal from the regulatory authorities in Mexico.

With the new agreement, AT&T will gain an additional 8.6 million mobile phone subscribers in Mexico.

According to AT&T, the acquisition will be completed after the Mexican conglomerate Grupo Salinas shuts its purchase of the 50 percent of Iusacell that it does not already own.

“Our acquisition of Iusacell is a direct result of the reforms put in place by President (Enrique) Pena Nieto to encourage more competition and more investment in Mexico. Those reforms together with the country’s strong economic outlook, growing population and growing middle class make Mexico an attractive place to invest,” Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and chief executive, said in a statement.

The development comes at a time when the country is gearing up to encourage healthy competition in the wireless sector.

Mexico’s telecom giant offers the wireless services under its own name and the Unefon brand, a network that covers about 70 percent of the country’s 120 million people.

Meanwhile, AT&T revealed its plans to carry out its network expansion in order to cover more population in Mexico.

“Iusacell gives us a unique opportunity to create the first-ever North American mobile service area covering over 400 million consumers and businesses in Mexico and the United States,” Stephenson said while adding, “It won’t matter which country you are in or which country you are calling — it will all be one network, one customer experience.”

The wide network would allow the American telecom customers visiting Mexico or vice versa to use the same network without changing their phones or subscribers or use any unique calling codes.

Iusacell’s headquarter will remain in Mexico City after the closing.

Verizon and AT&T’s ‘supercookie’ spying on customers’ online activity

Nov 5, 2014 By Christina Langfold Leave a Comment

at

US carriers Verizon and AT&T are snooping at the online activity of its more than 100 million mobile customers, the reports released by Electronic Frontier Foundation and multiple news outlets said.

According to the reports, both the service providers have inserted a special code, called ‘supercookie’, into the cellular web traffic of their networks.

Sources said that this code is being used by the telecom giants to track the online activity of their customers, including their browsing habits, duration spent, content browsed and others. The sources added further that Verizon will also be using the data to help marketing firms send mobile users the targeted advertisements.

A report by The Washington Post has mentioned similar snooping behavior of Verizon, saying the telecommunication firm has been keeping a track record of its 106 million retail customers — including those without government or business contracts — since 2012.

AT&T, on the other hand, is examining a similar monitoring system for ad purposes.

The customers who wish to know their status on being tracked by the companies can do so by using tools like ‘AmIBeingTracked.com’.

The snooping of customers’ online activity by their service providers is not new. Earlier tech giants like search engine Google and social networking site Facebook have long used tools such as cookies or numerical identifiers travelling with users between sites, to keep a track on their customers’ browsing habits and send relevant advertisement.

But Verizon and AT&T’s snooping activity seems to be very unprecedented. Unlike normal cookies, their supercookies cannot be deleted with the clearing browser data tool. As the markers are included at the network level, hence, the customers are tracked at all levels regardless of which sites they visit.

AT&T in legal trouble over ‘misleading’ internet data throttling

Oct 28, 2014 By Christina Langfold Leave a Comment

att1

American wireless carrier AT&T Inc on Tuesday entered into a legal trouble as the government has filed a lawsuit, alleging it of selling unlimited data plans to its consumers but at reduced Internet speeds once a certain amount of data is exhausted.

The Federal Trade Commission (FCC) filed a legal case against the country’s No. two wireless carrier as the federal body found the “throttling” of Internet feeds as misleading. The FCC said that it found slowing of data speeds in some cases by nearly 90 percent.

Meanwhile, AT&T turned down all the allegations levied on it, terming them as ‘baseless’.

“We have been completely transparent with customers since the very beginning. This program has affected only about three percent of our customers, and before any customer is affected, they are also notified by text message,” said AT&T’s general counsel Wayne Watts.

Over 3.5 million customers having legacy unlimited data plans had witnessed a slowdown in their Internet speeds by over 25 million times.

On its support website, AT$T said that its users who have certain plans can witness data slowdowns once they reach certain limits. The 3G smartphone holders will see slowdowns after they exhaust three gigabytes of data per month and those having 4G LTE smartphones can use five gigabytes before slipping into potential slowdowns.

AT&T, on its official website, has offered its users, who simply dislike slower internet connection, with another set of plan. They can use Wi-Fi or they can also avail the different plans of AT&T.

Meanwhile the shares of AT&T dipped briefly as the news hit headlines but recovered to be up about 0.2 percent during afternoon trading at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

AT&T apologizes before U-verse customers for false alarm

Oct 25, 2014 By Kevin Calderon 7 Comments

EMERGENCY

Wireless carrier AT&T on Saturday apologized before its U-verse customers for accidentally issuing an emergency alert message through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“A FEMA probe indicates that a nationally syndicated radio show not affiliated with AT&T accidentally sent a message over the National Emergency Alert System. This false message was carried on our network, as well as some other providers. We apologize to our customers,” said an AT&T spokesperson.

AT&T U-verse customers in several states including Georgia, Michigan, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas woke up on Friday morning with a federal emergency alert on their television sets, stopping them to switch to other channels.

The cautionary warning, which began popping up on TV screens at around 10 am EDT on October 24, asked the viewers to keep their phone lines free in order to receive an important message from the White House.

Fortunately, the FEMA alert message didn’t trigger any form of panic as caused by the prominent 1938 reading of “War of the Worlds” by HG Wells for the first time on the radio.

The alert message reads: “We interrupt our programming at the request of the White House. This is the Emergency Alert System. All normal programming has been discontinued during this emergency.”

Briefing about the technical glitch, FEMA spokesperson Rafael Lemaitre had said, “On Friday morning, there was an inappropriate playing of the national emergency alert notification tones on a syndicated radio broadcast. There is not a national emergency. Today’s broadcast triggered alert notification in states where the alert has been played.”

According to Lemaitre, FEMA is working with the Federal Communications Commission to investigate the incident.

“Certain alerts, like the one broadcast today, are designed to be automatically picked up and rebroadcast by other radio and TV stations. FEMA and the FCC are currently working with broadcasters to determine the full scope of the situation,” the FEMA spokesperson said.

AT&T also said that it is also trying to figure out what exactly happened, saying the warning should not have influenced anything other than television service.

France’s Iliad Group Drops Attempt to buy T-Mobile US

Oct 13, 2014 By Anne-Marie Jackson Leave a Comment

France

France’s Iliad Group has dropped its attempt to acquire a stake in U.S. operator T-Mobile US, citing a lack of interest from T-Mobile US parent company Deutsche Telekom. Iliad said that the move follows “exchanges” with DT and “selected” T-Mobile US board members “who have refused to entertain” Iliad’s offer.

Above this, Iliad was announcing its intentions while T-Mobile US was in talks about a merger with Sprint that was reported to be at $40 per share, thus hoping to create a true third rival to Verizon Wireless and AT&T, the two largest American cellphone carriers. But T-Mobile CEO John Legere has never publicly confirmed any deal with Sprint whatsoever.

The upstart French telecommunications company was reportedly trying this year to buy control of T-Mobile US, the big American wireless provider, for $15 billion. Iliad’s initial offer included plans to purchase a 56.6% stake in T-Mobile US for the reported $15 billion. DT shot down the offer, which was set at $33 per share, noting later that it was looking at a minimum of $35 per share for a stake in T-Mobile US. At the time of its initial offer, the Iliad was offering a 42% premium over T-Mobile US’ trading price. T-Mobile US’ stock was trading down just over 2% on Monday at around $27 per share.

Iliad said following the dismissal of its first attempt, it had “put in place a consortium of two leading private equity funds and tier-one international banks allowing it to improve significantly the terms” by boosting the cash amount and overall stake to 67%. That offer was valued at $36 per share, in what Iliad called cash and “value creation.” The value creation was to come in terms of more than $2 billion in annual cost savings to T-Mobile US and the creation of “value for both Iliad and T-Mobile US’ shareholders.”

Most likely Iliad’s bid for T-Mobile didn’t make a lot of sense to Deutsche Telekom because there were no synergies involved with a French company taking majority control of a U.S. wireless provider. The German company has to care about the operational management on one hand and potential savings on the other, as it would still have owned a stake in T-Mobile.

AT&T offers doubling of data at same price, in a bid to stay ahead in the telecom war

Sep 29, 2014 By Anne-Marie Jackson Leave a Comment

att
The largest telecom operator in the country AT&T made an announcement yesterday about it offering the existing and new subscribers, an option of doubling the capacity at current rates.

This promotion would run from today till October end and users who are on at least 15GB shared plans, are eligible for it. The price for the 15GB plan is $130, while that of the 50GB plan is $375.

Each additional line would be adding up $15 to the plan if it is purchased through AT&T Next offering or $40 a month, if the subscribers are signing up for a 2 year contract on smartphone. For additional $10 per month, a tablet can be added by those who are opting for this program. Each plan includes unlimited text and talk, with a cap on data usage.

With this current promotion, the AT&T would be put behind, Verizon Communications Inc. closer to Sprint Corp. and T-Mobile US Inc. Already, unlimited data plans are offered by the latter two on their shared plans for around same prices. This move can also be an attempt for slowing down the momentum of subscribers fleeing to T-Mobile. It may also be a counter to Verizon, which the analysts show to have the strongest postpaid subscriber growth in the current quarter.

Either ways, this promotion is definitely a good news for the consumers who have been the main beneficiaries of price wars in the industry.

“As a matter of fact, I’m going on record — I predict we’ll overtake Sprint in total customers by the end of this year. Not someday. Not next year. This year,”  Legere said.

According to Legere, the providers are giving high emphasis on the prepaid services as this has become an important area of the mobile marketplace. But no other wireless company has managed to beat the Un-carrier has in this sensitive market.

Americans are voting with their feet, and they’re joining this Un-carrier revolution by the millions,” Legere said.

MetroPCS brand has registered unprecedented growth following merger with T-Mobile last year.

Latest figures shows, MetroPCS has successfully multiplied its market reach to 45 major metro areas and about 10,000 stores by at least three times. America’s fastest nationwide 4G LTE network has also boosted its performance for expansion of markets and coverage. MetroPCS has added over 10 million prepaid customers and the numbers is tend to grow future.

Dish Network Ready With A Fall-Back Bid For T-Mobile US

May 12, 2014 By David Warren Leave a Comment

Dish Network (DISH)Chairman Charlie Ergen said that if T-Mobile’s (TMUS) merger with Sprint (S) fails, he’s ready to scoop T-Mobile up on the rebound, Bloomberg reported.

Ergen said a merger with DirecTV (DTV) would also be appealing, but would be too expensive and Dish cannot afford to fall into bidding wars with bigger companies, according to Bloomberg.

DirecTV shares have gone up lately on speculation AT&T (T) is in talks to buy the company, following Ergen’s earlier unsuccessful approach to DirecTV.

Bloomberg said T-Mobile US would appeal to Ergen because Dish’s pay-tv subscription service has slowed.

In afternoon trade, DISH was down 0.08% to $60.09, and TMUS was down 0.16% to $31.68.
