Canada is in shock after the Ottawa shootings that took place on Wednesday at the National War Memorial and the Parliament Hill. The attacker opened fire and killed a Canadian soldier who was on duty as a sentry at the National War Memorial. The attacker was shot and killed in the Parliament Hill building. Police thought that there were more than one shooter but it turned out there was only one, identified as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau.
The Canadian authorities believe the Ottawa shootings are part of a terrorist attack and the Prime Minister declared that Canada will not be intimidated by the extremists. Two other people were injured in the attack; one of the victims is a security guard at the Parliament’s Centre Block. Authorities said that both men are in stable condition at the hospital.
The attacker who started the Ottawa shootings was shot down by Kevin Vickers, a 29-year RCMP veteran, who was sergeant-at-arms for the House of Commons at the time of the attacks.
The attacker opened fire first at the National War Memorial, where he wounded a soldier, and then moved to the Parliament Hill where he was shot dead by sergeant Vickers.
The attacker was identified as Canadian born, 32-year-old Michael Zehaf-Bibeau. He lived in Quebec and British Columbia and had a criminal record. In 2011 he was charged with a robbery and in 2009 he pleaded guilty to a charge of marijuana possession. Authorities are looking to find out if the attacker had any connections with the Muslim community. A representative of the Muslim Association said that they’ve never heard the name Michael Zehaf-Bibeau before. There are witnesses saying that the guy who was guilty of the Ottawa shootings started running toward the Parliament Hill after killing Nathan Cirillo, 24.
There are many questions left unanswered like who was the attacker, why did he start shooting, who did he want to shoot? Was he the only one involved in the Ottawa shootings or he’s part of a terrorist attack?
What are your thoughts on the Ottawa shootings? Do you think the shooter was alone or he was part of a radical group of terrorists?
