As per the scientists, ice-quakes in Antarctica were a result of the giant earthquakes that hit Chile back in the year 2010. Within 5 hours of this massive earthquake in Chile, the little shakeups were captured in West Antarctica. For the 1st time, it has been indicated that the greatest ice-sheet in the world is prone to these powerful earthquakes.
A team of scientists reported that 12 out of 42 monitoring stations that were marked across the regions indicated clear evidence of increasing high-frequency seismic signals. It was also said that the signals coincided with ice cracks near that surface.
As per the research paper, the data that was received in the year 2010 lacked clarity. Most clear and accurate signs were recorded by monitoring station in Ellsworth Mountains of West Antarctica. However, signals at other stations were hazy and nothing was recorded.
Zhigang Peng at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta stated that there is highest possibility of shocks coming in from the movement within the ice-sheet itself and not due to faulty bedrocks. Even though there was no clarity, there is a major possibility of seismic signals showing from ice cracking within the ice sheet.
The earthquake had occurred on the 27th of February 2010 on the Maule region on the coast of Chile. It marked 8.8 on the magnitude scale and is 1 of the largest quakes that is recorded ever. More than 500 people were dead and damage worth 30 billion was caused.
Geologists have made a lot of attempts for digging out the reason for ice-sheets being affected in Antarctica and Greenland, where the rock is considered to be seismically peaceful. Few years ago, there was no method for identifying it, but as technology advanced, there is availability of new tools that can be deployed on top of the sheets or near them.
